India’s SMR Leap: A New Chapter in Clean Energy Leadership

India’s decision to advance Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) marks a defining moment in its energy transition. As the world searches for reliable low‑carbon solutions, India’s BSMR‑200 project signals a shift from dependence to innovation. Compact, safer and faster to deploy, SMRs offer exactly the kind of flexibility a growing economy needs—especially one aiming for 100 GW of nuclear capacity by 2047. The indigenous design led by BARC and NPCIL reflects a deeper strategic intent: to decarbonize heavy industries, stabilize the grid and repurpose ageing thermal plant sites without expanding land footprints. More importantly, it positions India as a credible player in the global SMR supply chain, aligning clean energy goals with technological self‑reliance. If executed with consistency, SMRs could become the backbone of India’s long‑term energy security. If you want, I can also craft a sharper or more policy‑focused version.

Diplomatic Protocol and Political Noise

Rahul Gandhi’s recent claim that the Government prevented him from meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin has triggered yet another round of political sparring. But diplomatic procedure is straightforward: visiting foreign leaders decide whom they wish to meet, and the Ministry of External Affairs merely facilitates those requests. This has been the norm under every government. Since becoming Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi has already met several international leaders—Sheikh Hasina, Anwar Ibrahim, Christopher Luxon and Navin Ramgoolam—because their delegations sought those meetings. The record itself undercuts the allegation of obstruction. Raising such accusations on a day of high‑level bilateral engagement inevitably shifts attention from India’s diplomatic priorities to domestic politics. At a time when global partnerships matter deeply, clarity about protocol is essential to avoid unnecessary controversy.

A Case That Demands Clarity

The contrasting actions in the Amedia case—arresting Sheetal Tejwani while allowing partners Parth Pawar and Digvijay Patil to travel abroad—have naturally fuelled public suspicion. Critics argue that repeated extensions granted to the inquiry committee and selective restrictions create an impression that those who should face tougher scrutiny are instead being shielded. Such perceptions, whether accurate or not, place the state’s Home Department under uncomfortable spotlight. Observers also note that prolonged ambiguity risks handing political ammunition to those seeking to target the image of senior leadership. In high‑profile cases, transparency and consistency matter as much as the investigation itself. Allowing the matter to drag on only deepens mistrust. A swift, clear, and impartial conclusion is essential—not just for justice, but for public confidence in the system.

The Politics Behind Trust Transfers

The swirl of rumours around Sonia Gandhi’s health, legal pressures and the alleged transfer of multiple family‑linked trusts to Priyanka Gandhi has once again pushed Delhi’s political circles into overdrive. Whether these claims hold factual weight or are merely part of the season’s political theatre, they highlight a deeper truth: succession within political dynasties is never a private affair. It inevitably becomes a national spectacle. The Enforcement Wing’s recent FIR has intensified speculation, and every administrative move is now being interpreted through the lens of strategy rather than routine governance. Talk of “safe passage” for senior leaders and potential legal trouble for others reflects the heightened mistrust that defines today’s political climate. Ultimately, the real issue is transparency. Public institutions and charitable trusts deserve scrutiny beyond family dynamics or partisan narratives.

Bengal’s Shifting Undercurrents: A New Phase of Political Volatility

The recent expulsion of TMC leader Humayun Kabir, after his controversial call to lay the “first brick” of a Babri‑style structure on 6 December, has added fresh turbulence to Bengal’s already sensitive political landscape. The move signals the ruling party’s anxiety over rising polarisation, especially with memories of persecution of Hindus in neighbouring Bangladesh still resonating among sections of the electorate. The ongoing CAA rollout for Matua communities, demographic anxieties, and the emergence of new political outfits are reshaping ground equations. Internal rifts within Muslim groups—between local communities and alleged infiltrators—further complicate the narrative. In such a fragmented environment, even small shifts can create Assam‑like political openings for national parties. What’s clear is that Bengal is entering a phase where identity politics, demographic pressures and competitive mobilisation will define the months ahead.
